About Us

STEVE LEWENT

Architect New York City resident

I was given a Kodak Starflash camera  at age 9, and have been taking photographs ever since.

My photographic work began in earnest in 1973 with the acquisition of an Olympus Penn 35 SPn rangefinder and, a little later, a Minolta XE-7 SLR.

I took many of the pictures on this site with these.

INSPIRATION

From the start, I was attracted to the unnoticed and ephemeral in the environment…

construction barricades
signs
billboards

a wrapped building
the view of the road
undistinguished architecture

and quickly extended to other parts of the background environment…

I want to see what we don’t look at.

Capturing the overlooked is not unknown in the realm of photography, but my work aspires to bring an art sensibility to ignored subject matter. Sometimes this happens intuitively, sometimes by design.

Analogies and Affinities

I admire the work of the sculptor John Chamberlain.
